Five Ways to Share Your Passion for Learning

5 Ways to Share Your Passion for Learning

Having passion for whatever you do is the key to success. Doing anything out of passion gives you fulfillment. Almost every other teacher will attest that he/she entered the teaching field because they love it. Teachers not only love teaching but also the subject material gives them excitement. As a teacher you feel complete when you work with and talk about what you love.

At times, as a teacher, you meet students who are not as enthusiastic as yourself. You can be caught up in a moment of pure passion when discussing a certain topic without realizing your audience doesn’t exactly sympathize with your sentiment. The truth of the matter is that as a teacher you love what you teach. But now the thorny issue is: how can you share your passion for learning? How can you make your students passionate about learning? As a matter of fact, unless learners have a certain degree of interest in a topic, they will not be motivated to excel. You can share your passion for learning in the following ways:

Regularly apply your passion, and tell your students

Be the role model. If you find something in the outside world that relates to the class, tell your students about your experience.  Let’s take for example when teaching about projectile you can relate it t the rugby ball. What your students and yourself talk about shouldn’t only revolve around the classroom.  Give your students real-life examples and experiences.

Passion is cool

This is the thinking of adults but most students often shy away from   becoming too “academic” as school is not always seen as something cool though it  is. Remind your students repeatedly that being passionate, smart is cool – and give them space to be cool. The best way to show this is by being an example.

Be open with your own passion

Have you ever been to a lecture room where the lecturer cares less about what they say? How did you feel? Really boring, sane? On the other hand, it is incredibly inspiring when the lecturer is talking about a topic with pure joy. The class is always lively and motivated. If you love something show it. It’s contagious.

Set goals and reward improvement

When you set goals with your students for their own academic growth, you have won half the battle. Students already have an internal motivating factor that will propel them to the set goals. Ensure that you reward students who make any improvement. Celebrate small successes. Encourage your students to always succeed in everything and put extra effort in all their academic endeavors. Every time you accomplish your goals, set higher goals and concentrate on achieving them.

Get students to apply it, too

If your students have experience applying the knowledge of whatever content to more than a test, you are good to go. Since classrooms are at times isolating.  Give your students a glimpse of the real world. For example, if you are teaching about a pendulum, you can have a merry-go –round ride with your students so that they can get the real picture of pendulum.

Exciting classes interests students as they spark the curiosity of your students. Although a school may not be able to use this exciting ideas everywhere, they should be used somewhere. Turning even just one student onto a particular topic is not an easy task, and getting an entire class passionate is the real challenge. However, with the right enthusiastic atmosphere, students will automatically realize that learning can be really, really cool.
