Prime Minister’s Research Fellowship (PMRF): Are you Eligible?

In the budget session 2018-19, the central government has announced to grant Prime Minister’s research fellowship to 1000 students who are pursuing their career in science and technology from premiere institutes of technology. 

What is Prime Minister’s Research Fellowship?

Students who are pursuing graduation or post-graduation in the field of science and technology from premiere institutes like the IITs, NITs, IISERs and IISCs and center funded IIITs can avail scholarship for their Ph.Ds. Under the program, meritorious students who are willing to go for research can avail grants of Rs. 2 lakhs per year and Rs. 70,000 per month for 5 years.

The basic aim of the PMRF is to encourage students to go for research and innovation to strengthen R&D in India.

Eligibility Criteria for Applicants

Students who are:

  • Graduates in B. Tech from five years or who are in last year of their B. Tech program from IITs, NITs, IISERs, IIITs, and IISC.
  • Graduates or last year students pursuing integrated 5 year B. Tech and M. Tech, Integrated M. Sc. Or pursuing course in science and technology from the above mentioned institutes
  • Should have secured at least 8 GPA in their graduation

How to Apply for PMRF?

If you are eligible for the criteria mentioned then apply at https://pmrf.in/ to enroll yourself in the program. You need to give a specific area of your research and study in 100 words followed by a 1000 word detailed abstract of the project proposed. You also need to mention expected outcomes of the project as well.

The basic aim of the project should be to deliver on cutting edge technology that can benefit the nation. The selection process is of two stage were the members of the selection committee review the application and based on merit sanction them. After the candidates are shortlisted then they will have to go through a written paper followed by an interview.

Benefits of PMRF

A monthly fellowship of Rs 70,000 per month will be granted for up to 2 year and 75,000 for third year and 80, 000 for the remaining two years. In total, Rs. 4.5 lakhs will be granted for a period of 5 years with a special yearly grant of Rs. 2 lakhs for travel expense, etc.

You will be allowed to use latest and modern research labs, libraries, journals, take part in workshops and seminars that will help you in your research.
