Reservation in India – An eye opener

reservation in india policy

Caste based Reservation with the rise of independent India was implemented in the constitution to help the socially and educationally backward castes/classes of the country. Our politicians in order to secure their vote bank increased the number to new levels. This simply means that few percentages of seats in central institutes are reserved for special caste/tribe.

The two most prestigious Indian Institutions namely Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) and Indian Institute of Management (IIM) have to follow the admission rules prescribed by The Central Educational Institutions (Reservation in Admission) Act, 2006 being centrally funded institution.

  • What is the policy of Reservation in India?

The Act entitles below reservation policy in India for admission in Education Institutes funded by Central Government:

Scheduled castes – 15%

Scheduled Tribes – 7.5%

Other Backward Classes – 27%

Do we really need a caste based reservation in India for the institutes wherein we have a common entrance exam (CAT & JEE) to test the skills of candidates?

  • The Loophole

These institutes impart technical education to the candidates who are tested on the uniform parameters in the exam. But the glitch lies in the admission system; students are tested on common parameters but ranked as per reservation policy.

Why can’t a batch of 100 students at a particular IIT comprise of 100 brightest students in India. But on the contrary we have a batch with:

  • 15 best scheduled caste students,
  • 8 best Scheduled tribe students,
  • 27 best Other Backward Class students and
  • 50 best general students.

No one in this world can justify why the 51th best general student didn’t have an admission. Even after scoring more than the reserved candidates and rightly deserves a seat.

Reservation system in such institutes is not helping the community or education standards. Instead the policy encourages students of the reserved community to put less effort in the entrance exams. They already know that they have a better chance to crack the admission list.

  • What can be done?

Students taking advantage of this policy should realize that they are not doing justice to themselves and other students. Also, they might not be able to achieve what a more deserving candidate could have. This does not mean that an ST/SC/OBC candidate is not talented. They surely are and they should respect their talent by competing with other students on common ranking parameters.

This will embark the hunger of right education to right person in India. Students who have passed high school are mature enough to understand that this reservation system in India is not benefiting anyone.

We dream of a day wherein news headlines say “SC/ST/OBC students protesting against reservation”. Students should believe in their talent and respect it. As an SC/ST/OBC student, reservations in such institutions mean; “we do not believe that you could have got admission through common rankings therefore, we gave you reservations in India”.

Caste based reservations in India is sheer disrespect to talent of a student belonging to any caste or class of society.
