Improve Your English Vocabulary in Next Ten Minutes

As per statistics English is the third largest spoken language in terms of native speakers, but is the most commonly spoken language, when natives and non-natives are combined. Most of the official documents and paperwork are in English. Thus, being fluent enough in written and spoken English is very imperative for one’s professional growth. But English vocabulary is not something you can learn over night, but a few tricks can help you ace all the important days of your life.

For starters

Learn the basic phonetics of English that is how the twenty-six alphabets of English language are pronounced, so that you nobody gets the liberty to mock your pronunciation of words. But off course, there are a few words that are pronounced differently and often, the rules for pronunciation change. For instance the alphabet Z was earlier spoken as “zed” but is now pronounced at “zee”. Same is the cases with Chores with was earlier pronounced as “Kores” and now is “Ch-ores”.

Phrases

The next thing you must learn is to learn phrases to express yourself. For the same feeling, the same thing you need to use different phrases depending upon the situation. The same sentence cannot be used for to express the same feeling every time, as the depth of the feeling, the situation and the listener will be different. You must know how to greet someone formally and informally, welcome someone, etc. as these are common situations that you will always face and create the first impression about you. In professional sphere, the next important thing is to know how to express your dissent with diplomacy and how to express gratitude with poise. You cannot be blunt and straightforward in such situations, else you’ll be mistaken as someone with a lot of negative attitude and pride, and hence land in bad books of your seniors. To avoid falling prey to such situations, increase your english vocabulary in phrases of politeness.

Grammer

Also, learn the basics of subject-verb agreement, as a bad grammar is often taken as a big put off in professional as well as personal arena. Proper use of articles is also very imperative. You need to know when to use a definite article (the) and when to go for an indefinite article (a/an). “a” is used when the noun starts with a consonant and “an” is used when the word starts with vowels. But in case of vowel “u”, go by the principle of phonetics. For, the word “utensil”, pronounced “yoo-ten-sil”, we use the article “a”, and for words like utterance “uh-ter-rance”, we use the article “an”.

Daily Exercise

These are some basic things about English, which if you learn can help you a lot. But, to be a master at it, give 10 minutes daily and learn ten new words every day which help boost your English vocabulary and you will always manage to create a favorable impression of yourself. Also, try to imbibe English in your routine conversations, and soon see the improvement in your grammar and fluency.
