MBA or MCA: Which Is Better Option After BE or BCA?

A question that troubles most of the students after the completion of their Bachelor’s degree in Engineering is what course to pursue in post-graduation- a Master’s in Business Administration – MBA or MCA – Master’s in Computer Applications? While, both are very sought-after master’s degrees with MBA requiring 2 years and MCA 3 years –these are two courses that cater to different areas.

Competition and Specialization

Considering pay scale as a factor for deciding which course to go for, won’t help as the initial remuneration is almost equal, while further career growth depends on how you perform on the job. Having said this, there is a lot of competition in terms of available jobs for MBA graduates in comparison to an MCA degree holder. This is because graduates from all streams can apply for MBA be it Science, Commerce or Arts, but to go for an MCA having a technical degree and Mathematics in your high school. Hence, there a fewer MCA graduates than MBA ones. Also, MBA can be pursued in a variety of specializations like- Agribusiness, Aviation, Banking, Biotechnology, Brand Management, Construction Management, Economics, Fashion Designing, Hospitality Management, etc. So, jobs are available in various sectors but MCA is restricted and you can have jobs only in Information Technology Sector.

Job vs. Entrepreneurship

As the name suggests MBA is about business and will help you if you wish to take a job in Management or start your own Entrepreneurial venture, and not majorly technical. So, if you are someone who is brainstorming frenzy and doesn’t want a corporate kind of job, we suggest you go for an MCA. MCA will keep you in the technical arena and provide you with a job that best suits your interest.

For the best of both worlds, go for an MBA in IT that will give you the opportunity to work in your own technical fields, as well as give you an insight into the running of the IT businesses. Off course, you then have the option of switching between a technical and managerial job as well.

Often people go for MBA post a BCA degree, but choose the course that suits your interest. Go for the one you think you’ll enjoy. If you’re passionate about Computer Applications, go for an MCA without a second thought, since your passion is sure to take you places, and if you go for an MBA against you wishes, the lack of interest may stagnate your growth. Never go for something that you won’t enjoy because of any kind of pressure. Pursue what you love and excel at it. Always remember- Be capable and you’ll find success following you!
