What are Scientific Diagrams?

Drawing diagrams is an essential part of science. A well-drawn diagram can clearly explain the concept and make the theory easier to understand. As a student, you are required to draw scientific diagrams on a regular basis. Now, those of you who are good at drawing find it fun to draw diagrams but for the other students, it is a nightmare. Subjects like biology have a lot of diagrams and in order to fetch marks, one has to draw proper diagrams. So how to draw diagrams properly?

Firstly, what we need to know is that there is no need to be afraid of drawing science diagrams. Actually, drawing diagrams is a great way to score marks. Even if you are not familiar with the theory concepts, you can easily draw a diagram and write some theory related to that diagram and still get good marks. Therefore, diagrams are actually an asset. To be able to draw good diagrams you need to be good at drawing. If not, you have to practice a lot. Do not try to draw all the diagrams at once. Try to draw them one by one on a daily basis. Regular practice is very essential.

How to get better at drawing diagrams?

A good way to get better at drawing diagrams is to divide a complex diagram into segments. For example, if you have a complex looking diagram, divide it into two or three segments. Then try to practice drawing each of those individual segments. Using this method, you can draw complex diagrams with ease. Start drawing the diagrams with a rough hand first. Draw a rough outline of the figure. Once you jot down the outline, start detailing it. Do not use a ruler at first. Try to draw with a freehand first. Once you are comfortable with drawing the diagram with a freehand, then move on to drawing using a ruler. If you start off with a ruler, it will take you more time and effort to draw the correct diagram and you may even lose interest. Therefore, start with a rough diagram and work your way up.

Now, different courses require different diagrams. So the approach to drawing different diagrams is different. Physics requires simple diagrams while the diagrams in biology are complex. So, it is necessary to understand the diagrams to draw them properly. For example, if you are drawing the structure of a chemical molecule or a chemical reaction, you would need to know how the molecules are organized in order to draw the diagram properly. What I am trying to imply here is that you have to understand the concept before drawing the diagram. That will make it easier to draw the diagrams. If you understand how light bends when it passes through a lens, you can draw optical diagrams easily. If you understand the structure of the cell properly, you can draw the cellular structure easily. Therefore, it is necessary to understand the concepts too if you want to draw a proper diagram.

Final Words

There is no need to be afraid of drawing diagrams just because you cannot draw properly. If you follow the tips given in this article, you can improve your drawing abilities a lot. You should change your perspective towards diagrams. Most students fear scientific diagrams because they feel they will lose marks if they do not draw the diagrams properly. It is not so. You should instead see it as a chance to gain more marks. See it this way; you do not know the theory concept properly but you can draw a well labelled scientific diagram; the teacher will give you god marks because she will assume you know the concept since you can draw the diagram.

Therefore, to summarize, scientific diagrams can be perfected if you practice regularly. Do not be afraid of them, see it as a mark scoring opportunity. And do not forget that practice is the key to drawing great scientific diagram.
