5 Teaching Traits and Strategies for Success

How are successful teachers known? What criteria do we use to gauge the success of any teacher? Is it their mastery of the subject they handle or confidence or experience as result of serving for long or the techniques they employ in class? As much as the above factors contribute to a successful teacher, one factor stands out among the rest: how the teacher delivers lessons in class. How teachers deliver lessons to the students has a direct relation on how the students will understand and remember the lessons. Successful teachers treat teaching profession as a calling which they always endeavor to fulfill. They give and wish the best to their students.

Successful teachers are always characterized by the following teaching traits.

  1. High expectations.

A successful teacher always expects the best from his/her students. They know the strengths and weaknesses of each student and what the class can achieve and what it can’t. They openly show believe in their students’ capabilities which act as a catalyst to motivate the students. The teacher always raises bar for their students and the students are willing to go an extra mile to achieve the set goals.

  1. Always ready to learn.

Successful teachers are always aware that each day is a day of learning, however the amount of knowledge they have in their area of specialization. They are ready to embrace any new information that can help them become even better teachers. They welcome challenges, questions and problems. They often create time to discuss with colleagues in staffroom or over the internet on how to help students with special needs and exchange new ideas in their field.

  1. Communication with parents.

They understand that effective communication is the key to any successful undertaking. They initiate an open communication channel between them and the parents, so that relevant student information can flow between them smoothly. They understand that without parent involvement in their children academics, some students may not get the best they deserve.

    4. Creativity

Creativity should be at the center when a teacher handles students for any lesson. Creativity will make the lesson exciting and sweet to all students thereby capturing their attention easily. This will boost their level of understanding and retaining of information they receive from their teacher.  It always makes students yearn for more knowledge and make lessons an unforgettable experience. Students will be attentive, active and looking forward to attending the next lesson with a lot of eagerness. Creativity makes learning fun for both teacher and students.

    5. Clarity

When beginning a new topic or project with students, a good teacher must clearly outline the goals and the purpose and spell out guidelines students should follow to succeed in that topic or project. A successful teacher use models to show the final results where possible and gives out ample examples so that the topic can be understood well by the students.

 To be successful in your career as a teacher doesn’t mean that you practice the above traits at once. Rome was not build in one day. Take one trait at a time and practice it. Soon you will be at the top of your career as a successful teacher.
