How can studying abroad change your life?

How can studying abroad change your life?

For many people, especially who come from small towns in India, going abroad for studies itself is a big decision. They are now going to a place that is much beyond their regular neighbourhood. They are sure to encounter challenges that they never even had thought of before. It is just like a fish in a pond has jumped into an ocean to explore the world that is much bigger than what they knew. This way, you get several opportunities to change for good. The article walks you through how a person can change by studying abroad, to become a better person.

Become more independent

When you go abroad for your studies, you are out of your parent’s cocoon. You start making your choices, your own decisions, and start living an independent life. For all the routine households, for which you have depended on your mom till now, will now become your own chores. Like cooking your own meal, cleaning your room, and folding your clothes. You start learning to do your chores on your own.

Change wrong perspectives

You have been living in the same environment for all these years since your birth. While there are many aspects that make Indians good, like respect for religion, respect for elders, and so on, there are so many aspects that you are not aware of and an Indian culture never provided you with an opportunity to know about them. In abroad, you will get to meet students from different countries, with varied thoughts. It is always good for you to adopt them for becoming a better person. I would want to quote a personal example here. At my home, I was always told that cleaning toilets are something that is a low graded work and it has to be done only by the maids. I also used to be in the same notion. After I went abroad, and got to share a room with a Vietnamese girl, and the next day when I saw her cleaning the toilet, it surprised me. When I asked her if she was okay to do this, the reply I got entirely changed my perspective and I realized how wrong the elders in my home are. She said, ‘’you should not just expect it to be clean when you have to use it, you should also keep it clean, for others to use it.’’

Improve communication

No matter how well you communicate in English, you would certainly not be in the same capacity of a Native English Speaker. This is because, English is not your mother tongue and it is theirs’. English could have been your medium of Instruction throughout your schooling. You might have secured high score in your TOEFL or IELTS. However, you would still not be aware that certain phrases that are used in India, thinking that it is the right English, is actually not known by the Native English speakers at all. The best example of such a phrase I can quote is ‘Head bath’. When I used this phrase while I was talking with two of American fellow mates of mine, I was ashamed to see their reaction, when they looked at each other for trying to figure out what was I saying.

Realize the importance of your culture

When you start getting exposed to other cultures and diversity, you will start realizing the importance of your own culture, and that you miss them abroad. It could be a festival or a ritual. Or it could be a practice that is closely connected with your emotions. Perhaps you never realized their worthiness when you regularly followed them in India. When you have been used to following them at your home or your close neighbourhood, and you are, now not getting an opportunity abroad, you start missing them and you also realize their importance.  Thus, studying abroad not only familiarizes you with diverse culture, at the same time it also helps you realize the value of your own culture. You will start cultivating values to become a better individual.

Gain confidence

Confidence is what highly matters for performing well in your academics as well as achieving success in your future career. When you are staying abroad, you start expecting the unexpected and you also get ready for them. This way, your confidence develops and you start overcoming all the hurdles. Ultimately you become a self-reliant person.
