English is now a global language. We cannot do without it.

The world has now truly become a global village. Every person has a smart phone and access to internet is almost round the clock. In order to keep pace with the rapid strides that technology is making, it has become imperative that we use English in our daily lives. Here are some simple techniques to learn English.

  • Know that there are no short cuts to learning any language. You cannot learn
English or any language within 30 or 90 days. Yes, young children are able to
imbibe a language very quickly, but that does not mean you cannot learn it at the
age of 50! Where there is a will- there is surely a way!
  • Start at a level that you are comfortable with. If the vocabulary of novels or newspapers is much too high for you, refrain from reading them. Read or download articles/books that you are able to comprehend. Only then the interest will be sustained.
  • Read books, newspapers, magazines or articles on the internet in English. More
importantly, read something that interests you. If you are a sports buff, read
the sports section of the newspaper in English. If you are inclined towards
politics or finance – read those columns in the newspapers or articles related to
these areas on the internet. Read regularly every day. That is most important.
  • Practise speaking in English with a group of friends or a partner/family member
who knows English. Once you know the basic vocabulary of your areas of
interest, conversing with others in English will not pose a problem. Practise,
Practise, Practise. This is the only way to learn English or any language for that matter.
  • The more mistakes you make, the more you will learn. Ask the person whom you
are practising your speaking skills with to correct you after you finish speaking.
Write out the conversation you practised in a book or type it out on a computer.
Analyse and learn from your mistakes.
  • Do not fear English. It is just a language. You just need to develop the skill of learning it the right way.

Yes. The progress will be slow initially. Consistent efforts will eventually bear fruit. You
will be able to communicate effectively with people around the world. Learning English
is bound to open up new avenues for you to explore and exploit. Whether we like it or
not, we have to accept the fact that English is now a global language and we cannot do without it.
