Doctor as a Career Option in Medical Science

Being a medical practitioner is one of the noblest jobs out there. Not only does it allow you to earn a good fortune, it gives the satisfaction of having cured people of some illness. There are many who opt to become a doctor only because of the latter factor. It is one of the best ways to help people. A good doctor is always respected in the society. A simple degree in medicine however is not enough to make a successful career. After a bachelor’s degree, people often go for specialization. A student going to the medical field must think about the field he/she wants to specialize in and concentrate on that field.

Basic Pattern of Medical Courses

  • The Undergraduate Course.

Undergraduate courses include M.B.B.S., B.D.S., B.H.M.S., B.A.M.S. and so on. M.B.B.S. is a five and half year course which is the requirement for most postgraduate courses. B.D.S., a 4 year course followed by 1 year compulsory internship, is for those aspiring to become a dentist. B.H.M.S. deals with homeopathy and B.A.M.S. with Ayurveda.

  • The Postgraduate Course

Two postgraduate courses offered are M.D. and M.S., both being 3 year courses and requires M.B.B.S. as eligibility. M.D. (Doctor of Medicine) is specialized in general medicine. A doctor who finished this course can work as a Physician. M.S. (Master of Surgery) is a specialization in surgery and upon finishing the course the doctor is eligible to work as a Surgeon. There is also a postgraduate diploma program for M.B.B.S. degree holders.

  • The Super Specialty Course

DM and MCh are two super specialty courses offered for doctors who finished a postgraduate course. DM is a 2-3 year duration course with M.D. as entry requirement. MCh is for M.S. degree holders and is a 2 year program.

Specializations

A number of options for specialization are available in medical field. An M.D. degree holder is a physician, whose job is to understand patient’s problem, diagnosing the illness and prescribing suitable treatment. A doctor who specializes in children’s health is called a Pediatrician. A Cardiologist deals with heart problems, Neurosurgeon deals with illness affecting nerve system, orthopedic surgeon treats illness of skeletal structure, Ophthalmologists treats eye problems. Lot of other specializations are available as well.

In conclusion, even though the medicine courses takes long time to finish, the time spent is worth it as it provides a good fortune, the good feeling of treating others and earns respect from others. A student before going for the course must analyze all the possible branches and choose one that suits him/her most.
