Board Results Out

Okay! So the results are you and you have done well (or maybe not so well). Doesn’t matter, because you are at a crossroad right now. There are a plethora of career options available to you. This is the time you can choose what you want to become. In this article, let us explore various career options that you can avail after completing your 12th.

Before you jump to the conclusion that you want to pursue engineering, stop and think. Right now you are at a critical juncture in your lives. You will be deciding your career. So take time to think and reflect. Most of our parents force us to take engineering because it has become a standard degree to have in India. It’s considered safe (career wise) if you have an engineering degree. Do not let these thoughts guide you. Reflect on what you really want to do. Today, in India, there are a lot of career options. It is not like earlier times when only Engineering and Medical studies were the major professions. Today you can make almost anything your profession. So, seek out your talents and pursue them. It is not possible to describe all the career possibilities in this single article. So let us talk broadly about the various career choices that you have. Keep in mind that the article does not place one career over the other. All we are trying to do is give you a clean perspective of various careers. No career/branch is superior to another.

Engineering and related courses: Majority of the students in India opt for engineering after their 12th. If you are the type who is interested in research, technical stuff, mechanics, electronics or any other technical choice, go for it! Engineering is perfectly suited for those who are inclined towards technical stuff. Related courses include courses like Bachelor of Science. These courses are for you if you are inclined towards research. Basically, if you want to learn more of what you have been taught in 11th and 12th then go for Engineering. Or else, do not opt for it. Believe me, if you are not interested, it will become a living h ell. So do choose wisely.

M.B.B.S and related courses: Being a doctor is the childhood dream of many and some students pursue it after their 12th too. Obviously, you can only go in for this course if you are interested in biology. Also, it is compulsory that you had biology as a subject in your 12th standard.  No other qualifications necessary.

The above two were the conventional career choices for science students. Now for commerce students:

B.Com and related courses: Again, there are a lot of degrees that you can pursue after your 12th. Mainly you can go into accountancy, economics, mathematics, finance etc. All these will be briefly introduced in your 11th and 12th standard. So you can choose as per your interests.

For students who had taken arts, you can go in for various courses related to Fine arts or applied arts. There are a lot of courses in these categories so we won’t be discussing them here.

Now, for the unconventional careers, you have plenty of choices. I cannot make a list of all the courses that are there in this category. What I want to convey is that if you decide to choose a career that does not fit into the above categories, make sure it’s the one you love. There are a lot of opportunities today than there were a decade ago. Times have changed a lot and you can use the opportunities available to get a good career. You can opt for careers in the animation industry, hotel management, culinary industry, film industry and many more. There is no shortage of careers in these categories and these are growing day by day.

Make sure that whatever you choose, you choose after careful consideration of all the aspects. Do not jump to conclusions about a certain career just because of all the hype or talk surrounding it. It may be good for somebody else, it may or may not be good for you. Therefore take time and consider all the pros and cons of your desired career. Do a lot of research before selecting any particular career. Talk to people in that field. Gain some experience. Then decide. At the end, make sure you are doing what you love.

All the best!
