5 Wittiest Questions Asked in Interviews

Wittiest Questions Asked in Interviews

An interview is a process to determine if a candidate is worthy of the position he applied for. It is used to gauze the candidate’s potential. Generally, interviews consist of questions related to the candidate’s personality, his skills and a lot of other facets related to the job. However, sometimes, the interview takes on a completely different turn and the questions that are asked in such interviews are best described as “witty” questions. These questions require the candidate to think outside the box and come up with an equally witty response to the question. Here are a few such questions that have forced candidates to think outside the box:

  1. The problem of three

You are driving along in your car on a wild, stormy night, it’s raining heavily, when suddenly you pass by a bus stop, and you see three people waiting for a bus:
An old lady who looks as if she is about to die.
An old friend who once saved your life.
The perfect partner you have been dreaming about.
Which one would you choose to offer a ride to, knowing very well that there could only be one passenger in your car?
This was asked in a job interview and the candidate who was selected answered:

“I would give the car keys to my old friend and let him take the lady to the hospital. I would stay behind and wait for the bus with the partner of my dreams.”

2. Marriage Issues

This question was asked in an IIM Interview and the reply is hilarious:

What will you do if i run away with your sister?”
The candidate who was selected answered,” I will not get a better match for my sister than you sir”

3. The Last Question

Again, we have a question from an IIM interview

The interviewer told the candidate, “This is the last question of your interview”. He then asked,” How many stars are there in the night sky?”

The candidate confidently replied, “Sir, there are around 20 million stars in the sky.”

The interviewer asked the candidate how he could be so sure, to which the candidate replied, “Sir, you just said that you won’t ask any more questions.”

Needless to say, he was selected

4. Obey every command.

This happened in a Services Selection Board interview. These interviews are held for selection into the Indian Armed Forces.

The interviewer asked the candidate to jump out of the window. Now, when you join the Army, you are expected to obey every command your senior gives you. The candidate analyzed the problem for a while and thought of an idea.

The candidate coolly walked over to the window, climbed on the window sill and jumped into the room. The interviewer was astonished and asked him why he jumped into the room when he was asked to jump out of the window.

The candidate replied, “Sir, you never mentioned which side of the room to jump”

5. Listen carefully

This one is from an IAS interview

The interviewer had grilled the candidate for over an hour and the candidate had answered all the questions successfully. So the interviewer thought about giving the candidate a riddle to solve to test is hearing and observation skills. He said,” If an electric train is running at 60km/hr. in West direction with the velocity of wind being 7 km/hr., tell me in which direction the smoke of the train will go?’”

The candidate thought for a while and then said with a smile, “Sir, electric trains do not release smoke.”

So, these were some witty interview questions that have been asked to candidates, these questions are not weird, but are designed to make you think. Therefore, the next time you are in an interview and you get asked a witty question, you know what to do.
