Why student politics in JNU is so vibrant than IITs and IIMs?

In the past, there were remarkable incidences of violence and protests found among the college students in India. However, the incidents of JNU, which are highlighted by the media, confirmed that student politics in JNU campus is highly vibrant. As a common citizen of this country anyone can have questions like these: Is student politics only limited to JNU? Why the student politics of other Institutes is not so vibrant like the students of JNU?

1. The influence of their subject

Students at JNU involve exclusively in studies related to the Socio-political issues of the country like Political Science, law or economics. Unlike, IIT students, JNU students not only study the social issues but also closely monitor these issues. Consequently, what a person studies, has a significant influence over his or her mind in due course.

2. Excessive workload

The students of IITs and IIMs are kept busy – throughout the year — not only in their studies but also in developing their professional skills so that they can become effective professionals of this country. In fact, they do not have enough time to involve in politics – either reading or discussing the political issues so deeply. The students of IITs and IIMs are more serious in their studies and in developing their overall personalities rather than involving in any kind of political activity.

3. Social ideology

The students of IITs and IIMs, by and large, adopt western ideologies of democracy; they do not lack political zeal, but their political ideology, definitely, differs from that of the students of JNU. The communist ideology among the JNU students is quite strange to students of IITs. In JNU, most of the students are, inevitably, influenced by Leftist ideology — even the teaching faculties do have the left-wing mindset. In JNU, there was a demonstration on the anniversary of the execution of Afzal Guru in 2013, a Kashmiri man who was convicted of a notorious attack on India’s parliament in 2001. Although students of IITs and IIMs are interested in politics, they are confined to choose any political issue in accordance with their social ideology.

4. The governmental system

According to the Institutes of Technology Act, each IIT to form a Senate composed of all professors of the Institute. The Senate is the highest decision-making democratic body in the Institutes which includes a few student representatives also. It has many Boards being headed by Deans. The student politics under this governmental system helps them to identify and rectify through an official channel. Political participation of students is and IITs and IIMs not lower, but it is in a different form they follow.

5. Political lineage inside the campus

Every student of JNU can witness the prevailing political environment inside the college. Especially, the students can sense the politically active nights with enthusiastic debates. The aroma of politics is present even in the dining hall through the leaflets and handouts on multiple issues related to social, economical, and political issues of the nations. The students have ample of opportunity even to indulge in discussion and debates of diverse national and international affairs after the dinner. This has become a tradition in JNU, whereas such practices are not familiar inside IIT campuses.

6. High expectations

In IITs and IIMs, the expectations of  parents and the Institution are so high that the students have to focus on their study with undivided attention.  Ultimately, students of IITs and IIMs feel that involving in politics may not be a right choice which may spoil their career. In IITs and IIMs, students are not just expected to pass, but to complete the course with a high score in order to get placed well. They know that studying in such Institutions is a great privilege in their lives; hence, they highly esteem the time that they spend at these institutions. In other kinds of Institutions, students have the tendency to distract from the academics easily.
