On the other hand, if we look at the United Nations, it has won 37 medals in just one Olympic and more than 2400 medals since 1990.India is at the 55th place in the list of the winning medals which is the serious threat if the nation wants to grow at the global level. In 2012 London Olympics India has won only 6 medals. In 2008 it just got three medals. These facts and figures shows the dismal performance of India in the Olympics. Through this article we should try to look at the reasons for the poor performance of India in Rio Olympics: –

Money is undoubtedly the most important reason

Despite the maximum number of space programmes and the large number of billionaires in India, it is still the very poor nation when it comes to the per capita income and sports is never be an important concern for the government which is ultimately affecting the country’s growth. For instance, Keshavan is considered to be the India’s greatest winter Olympian still his ticket to Sochi was not paid by the Indian government but by the crowdfund. Lack of facilities and awareness at the grass root level is another problem of this country. For most of the families time goes into thinking about their daily wages and their livelihood is becoming miserable day by day.

Stiff pressure from the parents to study

As the encouragement is the most important key to success in life. Parents in India do not encourage their kids for the sports as they do in the studies. Sachin Tendulkar is the best example for the sports and parents should try to learn something from his life. Parents look at the sports a little unsecure than other professional courses and pressure their kids to become professionals. This picture of insecurity does not let the players to fulfil their dreams.

Lack of Sports culture

India does not have a sports culture. Unless there is a systematic synergized sports culture you will never win a string of medals. In other words, education tends to be the highest priority for the average Indian household rather than extra-curricular activities such as sports. You do have scholarships in education but when it comes to sports no encouragement of this kind will ever be promoted. So this is the high time and a fundamental overhaul is needed and urgently so.

Corruption

Corruption is also the most important factor for the poor performance of India in the Olympics. It is the Corruption that is exploiting the country at the grass root level and letting many talented sportsmen to do nothing in sports.

Conclusion

It is the high time that teachers and parent should strive hard to look at their child with the inclination towards sports and should encourage them to perform well in the sports and games. All the sports facilities must be made available to both rural and the urban areas to make the people aware. There should be more parks and gardens for the children to play. Government should fund a reasonable amount in all the games equally. There should not be any discrimination in selecting the sportsperson and all the games should be encouraged equally like Cricket in India.
