Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) alongside the National Institute of Technology (NIT formerly REC) rarely give way to any other University in India. Delhi University is ranked with the top four IITs in the University Web Ranking for 2016. Aligarh Muslim University, AMU is in the 70th place. Nobody thought too much about it until this latest news update of the Best Global Universities rankings I showed Punjab University leading the Indian academic scene. Nothing surprising but what made everyone sit up and stare was the news about Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) taking the second place. Sure that must be a news backfire or slip up of a reporter’s pen…what? It is not? How…?
Indian Universities did not figure in the top 200 for 2015. QS ranks world universities for a group of subjects they choose. These are subjects that students choose for their professional career. History, Linguistics, Art and Design (Arts and Humanities), Computer Science, Chemical Engineering, (Engineering and Technology), Accounting and Finance, Developmental Studies (Social Sciences), and Mathematics, Chemistry and Education (Natural Sciences) are among the 36 subjects in the list. This has been going on since 2011.
The esteemed Delhi University is behind AMU…eh, what is the matter? In the list of top Indian Universities, we see that AMU has jumped over the IITs and NITs and Delhi University! Maybe I am missing something here, in the way US sees India and Indian Universities. (Or maybe Indians are not looking at AMU hard enough my friend! Sure!)
It does happen occasionally when there is a major overhaul of the administration, the faculty and improvements are done to enhance the infrastructure. This is like a scene from Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves, baba! You wake up and suddenly there is a new leader in the academic scene. Or does the US news agency really not see the IITs and NITs? Kind of like “Ah, these fellows! They are always around. Push them under the carpet. And put one University from down the list somewhere on top”. Really!
Yes, I think, America is trying to induce some inferiority complex in the coming generations of students from top-notch universities. You think it will work? Just wait for the next Best Global Universities ranking for 2017! I will not be surprised to see some other University like Assam University (currently ranked 153rd in top Indian Universities) make it to the top of Indian Universities.
“Hello! Should we complain or protest or something?” What US news agencies consider is good enough for them should not be harmful to us. Maybe they like to start from the bottom, right? Leave it at that.
