Afraid of Maths?
Most students are afraid of Maths. They feel that Maths is a difficult subject that cannot be dealt with easily. Actually, Maths is nothing like that. Maths in one of the easiest subjects that can prove to be a high scoring subject. In this article, we discuss some tricks that make life easier. With these Maths Tricks up your sleeve, you can impress friends as well as shorten your calculation time.
Multiplying a 2 digit number by 11 is one of the simplest task. You too can perform this task mentally. All you need to know is the trick.
Let us understand this trick with an example.
For example: 32 x 11
To multiply these numbers quickly follow the steps below
In this case, it is 3+2 = 5
In this case, place the 5 in between 3 and 2 to get 352.
That’s it. You can verify that 32 x 11 = 352.
For example: 48 x 11
4+8 = 12
Add 1 to 4 and put the 2 in between
Therefore, the tens digit is 5 now. The result is 528.
That’s it. Now you can multiply any two digit number by 11 in the blink of an eye.
To square a number that ends with a 5, you can follow an easy trick mentioned below. Again, we take the help of an example to solve the problem.
Since the last digit of the number always ends with a 5, the result is always 25.
For example, we have 85 as our number. We know that the last two digits will be 2 and 5.
Now, we multiply the ten’s digit number, that is 8, with the next number that is 9 to obtain 72.
Therefore, we write 85*85 = 72.
Now, many a times, we have to multiply two large numbers. If any one of the numbers is even, you can use a trick called subdivision to calculate faster. Let me illustrate this with an example.
48 x 125, is the same as:
24x 250 is the same as:
12 x 500 is the same as:
6 x 1000 = 6,000
This trick will work on most numbers but it has to be kept in mind that at least one of the numbers has to be an even number for this trick to work.
Percentages form an important part in any school’s mathematics curriculum. There is a simple maths trick that can be used to calculate percentages. Let us understand the trick by seeing an example.
We have to find 43% of 200. We know that 43% of 100 = 43.
Also, 100*2 = 200.
Therefore, by the same logic, 43% of 200 = 43*2 = 86.
Let’s take another example. Let’s find 48% of 225.
225 = 200+25 = (100*2) + (100/4)
Therefore, 48% of 225 = 48% of 100 + 48% of 100 + 48% of 25
Using the same logic as for the above problem we have:
48% of 225 = 48+48+ (48/4) = 108
This is a handy tip to keep in mind while calculating percentages. However, it must be kept in mind the number whose percentage is to be found should be divisible into factors like 50,25,20 etc.
The above were a few handy tricks that will help you to calculate more easily and score well on your tests. Practicing Maths this way is fun and it will remove your fear of Maths too. Remember that these are not the only tricks that you can use. A simple Google search will reveal tons of tricks that can be used to shorten calculation time. Therefore, Maths Tricks are an effective tool to learn Maths in a fun way.
