Do Air Hostess Really Earn Big?

Do Air Hostess Really Earn Big

Many people are excited at the mention of becoming an air hostess. In fact, as soon as airlines advertise job vacancies for flight attendants, applications start flowing in. For instance, 10000 applications were received for 750 attendant positions by Southwest Airlines recently. The number of applications reached 10000 within approximately two hours only. One of the reasons for this high level of interest in the job of air hostess is the assumption that it is a laid environment. Another reason which attracts people to this post is the wish to travel and get paid at the same time. After all, who would not want to earn money while travelling? However, being an air hostess comes at its own price. In fact, what is more important is whether it is really worth it and whether an air hostess can really earn big.

  1. Paid Only For Flight Hours

Air hostesses do quite a lot of work even before the plane start moving. They cram bags into overheads, for example. However, that time is not accounted for on their paychecks. Air hostesses only get paid for flight hours. That is, their pay starts increasing the moment the plane begins to move away from the gate and stops the moment it reaches to the destination gate. Therefore, all the pre-flight preparation is unaccounted for.

  1. Unexpected Changes In Flight

What do you think happens in the case of flight delays? What about flight cancellations and layovers? Of course, clients are not happy about such incidents. However, air hostesses might be the ones who suffer the most from these. A flight cancellation leaves a loophole in an air hostess’ paycheck. After all, they are only paid for flight hours.

  1. Air Hostesses Get Fired Easily

If you are relying on an air hostess paycheck to pay for living expenses, you might want to reconsider this arrangement. As a matter of fact, air hostesses are easily fired. The newly hired ones are usually under strict probation for the duration of six months. Some are fired for putting on their uniform sweater around their waist. Others are fired for flying when they are sick. As you can see, the reasons are sometimes bizarre, but apparently sufficient to get sacked.

  1. Expected Salary

The expected salary obviously depends on several factors. It depends on the airlines, experience and flight hours. Generally, the basic starting salary for cabin crew can be expected to be around £12,000 per year. There are some additional allowances which can increase the amount to £14,500. With experience, some cabin crew members can expect £15,000 to £18,000 annually. Some airlines also pay for the nights spent in foreign locations. At senior cabin crew level, around £20,000 can be expected.

Conclusion

The amount of money an air hostess earns really depends on the amount of time and effort she puts in. There are also sacrifices which need to be made in order to succeed as an air hostess. Although they are only paid per flight hours, these can quickly amount to a large sum if they are assigned more flights.
