With the high demands of critical thinking at school, students tend to be tiresome after series of lectures, presentations, reports projects and the likes. So, just like the other parts of your body, your brain needs food too so that it could recover from being exhausted the entire time it is used. But, what are the essential foods for the brain and keep our grey matter going?

Here are some of the common brain food that might be available in your local supermarket and you might want to add up to your food diet plan:

  1. Go get some grab of oily fish

 There are some substances that cannot be generated by the body; one of which is the Essential Fatty Acids or EFAs. EFAs are important for healthy cognitive functioning and these can be obtained through eating foods rich in EFAs like oily fishes which include: salmon, sardines, and kippers to name some. However, EFAs could be obtained too from eating pumpkin seeds, soya beans and walnut.

  1. Eat more blueberries

A certain university in the United States of America namely, Tufts University conducted a research on the effects of eating blueberries to healthy brain functioning and they found out that binge eating of blueberries could somehow manage short-term memory loss. So, the next time you go to the fruit stand, include blueberries in your to-buy list.

  1. Start loving to eat broccoli

Broccoli, one of my favorite veggies happens to be a rich source of vitamin K which is very famous in improving brain processes. Broccoli is very available almost every market you could go, so there is no excuse of not eating a broccoli if your aim is to feed your brain a healthy food.

  1. All kinds of nuts, not just peanuts

Well, actually peanuts are not nuts. However, almonds, one of the most popular nuts, contain vitamin E and vitamin E facilitates good cell regeneration including the brain cells. So, it means, that eating nuts could promote proper brain activities.

  1. Tomatoes too

As a matter of fact, tomatoes contain lycopene which is according to some valid researches, lycopene is a powerful antioxidant. It means that tomatoes are good eliminators of free radicals in the brain and avoids further damages that might be caused by free radicals. Eating tomatoes could help delay or reduce the chance of developing dementia, specifically, the well-known, Alzheimer’s disease.

  1. Choose wholegrain

Wholegrain is rich in carbohydrates. Carbohydrates are the major producers of energy and just like any other organs in the body; the brain too needs energy in order to function accordingly. Unlike other sources of carbohydrates, wholegrain has low-GI, which means, the carbohydrates converted into glucose or sugar is gradually distributed throughout the body, therefore, it will keep your body processes including the brain process going all throughout the day.

  1. Take supplements

If you are too lazy to eat all those food mentioned above, you can actually take supplements as prescribed by your trusted physician. But, the risk of taking in supplements is that, it is not 100 percent natural and thus you might get some carcinogens and might create a long-term damage in the long run. You can do this to compensate the food that you needed to eat for a healthy brain but this is not highly recommended for a long-term use.

Disclaimer: Even if you take all of these, diet should be incorporated with proper exercise and proper rest which include getting enough sleep. So, diet is a major factor to keep your brain healthy but to obtain a sound mind, one should not sacrifice sleep and rest. Our body, including our brain should not be exhausted because everything that is excessively put into work is not healthy. It will surely create alterations with the systemic and cognitive function of the body. So, as students, learn to manage your time properly. Make sure that you will not sacrifice sleep over excessive studying and vice versa. There should be a balance so that, neither of the two: your studies and your mental health will not be compromised. So, get some healthy brain food diet and take well enough rest. Live healthily and live happily.
